Call it a need. Regardless of how good something looks, the frame rate, the button layout, all of us gamers want to have fun. It is what we bathe in when it comes to these titles we decide to shell out for. It is why we spend most of our free time in front of a television or monitor when others don’t understand. It’s why we argue over the little things when even the people that created it will never hear of our arguments, even if they would have cared who was right.
Sadly, most creators miss the mark when it comes to this aspect. It can be the cause of aforementioned, or simply it doesn’t have it. There have been plenty of games which seem right and wrong all at the same time. They create fun and pass the time, but they simply don’t create the symphonic havoc that captures our imaginations for serious blocks of time.
For most of us, Infinity Ward’s last title, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, blew us away because it was simply good. It took many of the elements of a normal First Person Shooter (FPS) and refined it. Things like a refined heads up display (HUD), frenzied multiplayer, and a solid, if short, single player story helped the title become one of the shining stars of this generation, and all the accolades that its lead character, Soap Mactavish, deserved for his heroism.
For most development companies, a sequel to this would have been a simple slam dunk of adding a few more weapons and maps with a new story. Well then again, most companies aren’t Infinity Ward, and their latest, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, isn’t just a slapped together combination of old parts. The developer tried to fix the shortcomings of the first and in return gave the world a game that will be on par with the first one.
The single player of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is where it begins. Those who were wrapped up in the magic of the first game know that there was a tangled weave of heroism and failure that had most inside the narrative. Luckily, that feature is back. You will find your soldier (a combination of three) doing combinations of things you could never expect in a single console shooter The game takes you through tasks like climbing mountains, fighting through the streets of Virginia, and even killing civilians, all in the name of military victory.
Once again however, the campaign is relatively short. For those who wish to tackle this in a few sittings, having the difficulty on Regular will be able to accommodate that experience. For those who want a bit more of a challenge, the Hardened and Veteran difficulties really make you think, however, they only make the game slightly longer. Fair warning however, those who are not good at shooters should avoid these difficulties, because they can be unforgiving, especially Veteran.
Even with the great single player, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 bread and butter happen to fall under the multiplayer. There are two tiers of multiplayer that both give the game the depth anyone would and should expect. The first, the standard multiplayer, player vs player (PVP) is in the same rare form the first title gave us. The second, the Special Forces addition, lets players play in cooperatively in their own fire teams.
PVP was one of the calling cards in Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare, and for good reason. The level up system and the customization allowed for anyone to work the angles to be their perfect soldier. Gaining the achievements set by the game allowed one to level up. This left the standard gamer score achievements to be left to the single player. Online was a battlefield, won by those who had the right weaponry and good teammates to cover them.
It is the same story in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, except they aren’t too nice when it comes to weaponry. Unlike the first game, everything you get is earned. The M16 (one of the bread and butter guns and a starter weapon in CoD4MF) isn’t earned for a while. Perks are also unlocked with time. It is if rank isn’t just a number anymore, it can tell you who is equipped and their fire power, giving more experienced members reason to go protect your teammates.
Even with some of the lag issues that have been there, this game actually has gotten even more fun. The new maps accommodate some interesting locales and capture the player’s attention with the amount of hiding space and firing zones they can present.
The Special Forces mode adds a cooperative vibe to the game, as it is you and your fire team against what feels like waves of enemies. You are ranked based on mission objectives, time, and survival skills. The game ships with several missions cut up into segments that are designated by difficulty.
These missions are filled with difficulty and have some different mission objectives. Some simply want you to defend. Some are sniper missions that require the tact to keep quiet. Some are just all out shooting galleries. They require skill and can be used as good team building exercises for clans. It has all of the difficulty of the outside PvP world, but can also give teams the chance to define roles to take it to the other players out there.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is just special. The short version of this review is this game is fun. While other sequels either focus trying to make new gamers happy or keeping things too esoteric for the average guy to pick up, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 seems to toe the line to keep everyone happy.
For those who need the new game in their lives, one would be hard pressed to find another that fits the bill quite like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Its energy in the story telling and multiplayer give those plenty of reason to love it. That is why you shouldn’t be surprised to hear people argue about the little things in this title. It is well worth the adulation, even if Infinity Ward never hears 99% of the arguments this game will cause.
